The students’ unions are also represented on the councils of public universities. Mr Speaker, the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) has not made a formal request to the Ministry of Higher Education to have the allowances for Government-sponsored students.
The University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) has not approached the university management, University Council or the Government in order to make their request. Mr Kazabu (Nkana): Mr Speaker, the problems at the University of Zambia (UNZA) are not new. My question was: Despite airing their demands in that manner, do they have the right to ask for an increment? Minister say that much as he disagreed with the manner in which they want to bring their grievances to the attention of the authorities, they have the right to ask for an increment. The money may be delayed, but it will eventually come.
Instead, the students decided to go to the streets to burn cars of people who actually pay taxes from which their bursaries are paid. The students should also appreciate that there are a few of them who are privileged to get bursaries.
