Word surfaced earlier this month that discussions had resumed, this time for Stone to replace current lead Michelle Williams when her extended run in the production wraps on Nov. The timing worked out on the second try, with Stone now confirmed to be stepping into the show as Sally Bowles from Nov. The cast also features 2014 Tony nominees Linda Emond and Danny Burstein, along with Bill Heck, Aaron Krohn and Gayle Rankin.
Directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, the production stars Alan Cumming, reprising the role of the Emcee that won him a Tony Award the first time around in 1998.
Other actresses to play Sally in that original six-year run included Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joely Fisher, Gina Gershon, Molly Ringwald and Brooke Shields, while Cumming's replacements as the louche Emcee included Michael C.
Hall, Neil Patrick Harris, Raul Esparza and John Stamos.
I’m learning rapid fire Spanish, and it’s a little overwhelming considering we have a few cast members who have already done the show on the national tour. I think Utah has such a strong cultural community just like the Latino community in the Heights.
I think this show’s success really hangs on the character of Usnavi and I’m . It’s hilarious; the music is completely incredible (salsa, traditional musical theatre, rap, hip hop); and the message is incredibly uplifting and relatable.
The revival's return engagement began previews on March 21 this year at Studio 54, officially opening on April 24.
The production has grossed .7 million to date, showing resilience at the box office through the summer months, when many shows tend to taper off.
Marshall came on board to co-direct and choreograph the show's expanded Broadway staging, with Cumming reprising his role opposite fellow Tony winner Natasha Richardson.
The production won four Tonys in all, including best musical revival.
